@Jenny: I have not read shop girl. I try not to batch my reading (just did Martin, so now I will probably move on to something SciFi, or Vonnegut if I can find it), so it takes a while to work through everything. I am trying to locate audiobooks of works read by the author, so maybe if my local library has Shopgirl read by Martin I'll get to it sooner than later.

I also forgot to mention that Martin recalls performances at Vanderbilt and Exit/In here in Nashville as sites of unexpected inspiration.

one of my earliest pop culture remembrances is being up past my bedtime and seeing steve martin doing the "wild and crazy guys" sketch on snl. my dad had the whole fake arrow through the head prop and everything. big fans.
anyway, my main comment was to check and make sure you have read his novella "shopgirl", which is startlingly deep and insightful. i never expected it to be so memorable. i thought it was going to be comedic. apparently he has either a psychology or philosophy degree (bob told me, and i can't remember which it is) but either way, that might explain his ability to get under the skin of his twenty-something modern girl character with such depth.

You mean like when I am having a housewarming party as a first time homeowner and then posting pics of it on my blog?
And anyway, I listened to the audiobook while working, I don't think you would want to be invited to that.

I was going to say it's nice to hear a little cheerfulness in your voice but then I decide to tell you not to tell us when you're having such a great time are we're thousands of miles away and not invited.
